In this fascinating talk, Professor Susan Greenfield explains the concept of neuronal plasticity, arguing that new digital technologies are re-wiring the brain’s frontal cortex – the area of the brain responsible for cognitive analysis and abstract thought.  At the same time, excessive internet use robs the brain of the neuronal networks responsible for empathy and social skills.  Should this concern us? The answer is yes according to Greenfield who suggests that ‘mind change’, brought on by increasing internet use and the popularity of social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, will effectively be the ‘new climate change’.  A sobering though indeed.
